Commentaire

This Bamana puppet head has a strikingly elongated form, its long muzzle sweeping forward in a powerful horizontal gesture. The head is reduced to a projecting snout and a gently rounded crown, while raised bands and rectangular appliqués animate the surface with a rhythmic, almost graphic pattern. The dark, encrusted patina gives the sculpture a remarkable sense of age and vitality. Its exaggerated proportions and slightly uncanny expression are characteristic of the imaginative animal forms of Bamana puppet theater. Such heads were mounted on rods and manipulated during masquerades, in which animal puppets, masks, music, dance, and storytelling were brought together. Performances accompanied important communal occasions, including agricultural festivals and celebrations marking the cycle of the year. Rather than functioning as an object of private worship, the puppet entered a collective ritualized space in which animals became metaphors for human character, social values, and the relationship between the individual and the community. In performance, this otherwise silent wooden form became something altogether different: a creature set loose among the living. One of the nicest examples I have handled.
