This small Chokwe snuff mortar is an elegant interplay between stylized anatomy and rhythmic curves. The slender body is elongated and subtly exaggerated, with the shoulders, hips, and bent legs creating a graceful, almost fluid movement. The face is particularly expressive with its deeply carved eyes, small triangular nose, and grooved mouth. Above the head, the cylindrical mortar creates a striking contrast with the animated figure below. Its smooth, simple volume seems to float effortlessly upon the figure’s head, turning the functional object into part of the sculpture’s formal composition. The object embodies the Chokwe sculptor’s remarkable ability to compress utility, elegance, and expressive distortion into a remarkably small form.
